Initially, the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) was set up in the name of Association Internationale des Automobile Clubs Reconnus (AIACR).

The very name of the organization implies the structure of the same. The organization is usually identified as an international organization of national clubs. And, this is why the organization consists of 213 national member organizations representing 125 countries of the world. Presently, the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) is presided by Max Mosley. It is headquartered at 8, Place de la Concorde, Paris, France. General public usually identifies the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) as the governing body of international motor racing events. And, it is true that this organization is playing a vital role in popularizing automobile racing. In 1922, FIA got the recognition of an autonomous body and then it was called the FISA, Federation Internationale du Sport Automobile.



In 1993, FIA was again restructured and FISA was replaced by the direct management of the FIA. The list of the members of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) is pretty long and it is not possible to mention all but some of the major ones are IMI- Indonesia, ADAC- Germany, ACI- Italy, JAF- Japan, ELPA- Greece, CAMS- Australia etc.
