The first race of Spanish Formula One Grand Prix was not a part of the present Grand Prix. It took place at Guadarrama, near Madrid, which was on the road to Vallavoid; it took place on a 300 kilometer road circuit. There have a number of motor racing events in Spain prior to this. The most notable one was the Catalian Cup of 1909 and 1908, which took place on the roads around Sitges, near Barcelona. Jules Goux won both these events, which establishes a strong tradition of race in Catalonia, which has continued till present day. This enthusiasm resulted in the building of a permanent track at Sitges, which is a 2 kilometer oval track, known as Sitges-Teramar. This was the venue for 1923 Spanish Formula One Grand Prix.
In the year 1960, the Royal Automobile Club of Spain commissioned a new circuit at the north of Madrid and thus Spain again got included in international motor racing after 1951. a non championship Grand Prix occurred in 1967, where Jim Clark won while racing in Lotus. The circuit near Madrid is called as Montjuic Circuit in Barcelona. In 1991, this event moved to a new track which is evident till date. In 1992, the car racing event was advertised as Grand Prix of Olympic Games.
