After Tamburello

1st May 1994 is considered to be a major landmark in the history of Formula One as this day marked the beginning of the current era in Formula One and this current phase is usually referred to as the period after Tamburello. But, as it is known to all that the phases of the history are not water tight compartments and so, the preparation for a new era can be traced back to few years before the official date. And, in this case, we can say that after Tamburello began in 1991 with the Belgian GP at Spa. Mansell and Prost was not participating in the 1994 F1 season and Schumacher took the charge of Ayrton Senna and drove new F1 cars under the revised FIA specifications. Thus, the era of the Formula One after Tamburello encouraged competition among the drivers and not between money and technologies.

For the past few years, Formula One had witnessed tremendous growth and introduction of engineering excellence and advanced technologies in automobile racing and technologies overshadowed the skills of the drivers. But, Formula One had always focused on the promotion of the drivers' skills and so, we can say that the era after Tamburello can be considered to be a revival of the true spirit of Formula One. This phase tested the drivers' skills. Brazil got prominence in this phase. But, there were some drivers who actually opposed these specifications and in this context it must be mentioned that Senna prophetically announced that this would be an age of accidents. But, everyone looked forward to the fine combination of Senna and Williams as far as the World Championship of 1994 was concerned.

Unfortunately, Senna failed miserably and Schumacher excelled and the phase after Tamburello actually witnessed two major accidents. The first one took the life of Simtek driver Roland Ratzenberger and the Brazilian Rubens Barrichello got severely injured and these accidents shook the faith of GP fraternity. Thus, just like any other phase, the era of the Formula One after Tamburello also witnessed several developments, revival of old specifications and accidents shaking the faith on those specifications.
