The Turbo Era

The Wings, Shunts and Ground Effects got replaced by The Turbo Era of the Formula One. Gradually the experts realized that the ground effects were not that important as far as the long term development of F1 technology is concerned. Turbo charging gained prominence in this phase and so, this phase of the history of Formula One was named after it. We can trace back the origin of The Turbo Era in the early 1977 season. During the initial days, Lotus was still favoring the ground effect principle while Renault introduced the turbo RSO1. Jean Pierre Jabouille was the most efficient driver of The Turbo Era.

The first turbo was shockingly quick although it was facing the problem of turbo lag under acceleration. But, unfortunately, the turbo development was quite slow especially after the Lotus onslaught of 1978. 1980 can be marked as the major landmark of The Turbo Era of the Formula One. In this season, Alan Jones and Team Williams came into prominence with their notable achievements. This was not a favorable season for Ferrari. The Scuderia introduced their own turbocharged car at Imola. The Turbo Era also witnessed tremendous tussle between FISA and FOCA, the boycott of the Spanish GP and the settlement of the same through the first Concorde Agreement in 1981.

Grand Prix came into prominence in the World Championships of 1981 and one could trace the tremendous domination of the turbos in that particular phase. The Turbo Era witnessed more development of the turbos especially from the 1981 and 1982 seasons. It has been recorded that turbos won 14 races during this phase and the success rate is truly quite impressive.
