Points System of Formula One

Formula, the very name indicates that a participating team must pertain to a set of formulas. Part of the rules and regulations of formula one racing is Points System of Formula One.

The championship of the driver and the constructor is dependent on the Points System of Formula One. These points are awarded according to the place that the driver finishes the race at each Grand Prix event. But finishing the race is not mandatory according to the rules of the race. Points are alloted to the team even if the driver fails to finish the race. According to the Points System of Formula One adopted by the formula one governing body at least 90% of the distance covered by the winner has to be covered by the retiring team; to qualify for points. The Points System of Formula One currently followed gives points to first eight places. These are as follows:

1st Place-10points
2nd Place-8points
3rd Place-6points
4th Place-5points
5th Place-4points
6th Place-3points
7th Place-2points
8th Place-1point

This system of Points have been adopted since 2003. Before this another system in points was followed. Sometimes it happened that the person taking the maximum number of points was not the champion. To avoid such inconsistencies the new system of allotting points was adopted. The new system allowed more teams to run for the championship title. If 75% of the planned distance is failed to covered before retiring then the points are halved. The sum of the points received by each driver of the team is taken into account at the end of the season. If the points of two teams are same then championship is awarded to the team according to the number of wins. Championship goes to the team with maximum number of points in its kitty. If the number of win is same then the team securing most number of second position is declared the winner. And so on.

The Points System of Formula One plays an important role in identifying the Champion of the Title.
